The Black Keys. The first time I heard about them was through their Blakroc project, and through Dan Auerbach’s solo album (Keep it Hid). And after some googling I found out that their latest album Attack & Release was produced by Danger Mouse. My introduction to bluesrock couldnt have been more sublime.

Joker’s Daughter is the collaboration between Helena Costas with Danger Mouse, her being a vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, and him being the renowned artist and producer. The track Worm’s Head is taken from the debut album The Last Laugh, released June 2009. The video is directed by Randy Knott. Lucid is the second single, with a video is directed by Hayley Morris (who recently won Best Animated Short at the Sundance Film Festival). This is why I love music in all its diversity and depth.

I am a very big fan of Stephen Marley, because of the realness and the rawness of his voice, cutting through your soul, dripped in pain, yet leaving you with a smile. So I was veryvery happy when a few years ago he released his first solo album Mind Control. Great album, what more can I say. And now, only a few days ago, I noticed that lately he also released an Acoustic version of the Mind Control album, with the songs re-arranged, re-played, and re-sung. And again, what more can I say, as he is already saying it for me… And all that remains is me… speechless.

Stephen Marley is 1 vd weinige stemmen die rechtstreeks mn ziel lijkt toe te spreken. Een stem waarop de dood mag volgen. Alleen jammer dat de man niet zo spraakzaam is want hij heeft pas 1 album afgeleverd, Mind Control. Een prachtig album dat vele malen op repeat heb gestaan, in mn itunes, ipod, en hoofd. En nu een paar jaar later krijg ik dit als toetje der toetjes. Een akoustische versie van het Mind Control waarop de nummers opnieuw gearrangeerd, ingespeeld en ingezongen zijn. WAANZIN. Dit maakt me zo blij…

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, October 13, 1948 – August 16, 1997, was a legendary Punjabi musician from Pakistan, primarily a singer of Qawwali, the devotional music of the Sufis (a mystical tradition within Islam). He featured in Time magazine’s 2006 list of ‘Asian Heroes’. He is often referred to as the greatest singer Pakistan has ever produced. He was considered as one of the greatest Qawwals in the world. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (Faisalabad, 13 oktober 1948 – Londen, 16 augustus 1997) was een Qawwali zanger uit Pakistan. In Pakistan verkreeg Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan al gauw grote bekendheid. Hij scoorde een hit met het nummer Haq Ali Ali. Internationale bekendheid kwam pas in de jaren negentig, nadat een album van hem werd geproduceerd door de Canadese gitarist Michael Brook. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan werkte samen met Eddie Vedder aan de soundtrack van de film Dead Man Walking. Ook in de films The Last Temptation of Christ en Natural Born Killers was zijn muziek te horen. De samenwerking met zijn vriend Peter Gabriel zorgde voor verdere erkenning. De zanger stierf in 1997 in Londen op 48-jarige leeftijd aan een hartaanval, kort nadat hij in een ziekenhuis was opgenomen met nier- en leverproblemen. Here is an update on the IFFR. Today is my 5th day and I’ve seen 5 films till now. Nymph, City of Life and Death, Valhalla Rising, Hadewijch, and Mundaine History.

Nymph (adultery and nature) was very hard to digest, Valhalla Rising (vikings) kinda boring and stupid, and Hadewijch (religion) kept it simple. City of Life and Death was a very good yet horrific movie about the japanese invasion of the chinese town Nangjin. 300.000 people get slaughtered in 3 days. And then there was the wonderful Mundane History. The movie starts simple, but ends up being a movie about our relationship to the universe, our place in life, the politics, the social context, and humanity.

Hier is een update over het IFFR. Vandaag is mijn 5de dag en ik heb 5 films gezien tot nu toe. Nymph, City of Life and Death, Valhalla Rising, Hadewijch, en Mundaine History.

Nymph (overspel en natuur) is zeer moeilijk te verteren, Valhalla Rising (Vikingen) beetje saai en dom, en Hadewijch (religie) hield het simpel. City of Life and Death was een zeer goede maar gruwelijke film over de Japanse invasie van de Chinese stad Nangjin. 300.000 mensen afgeslacht in 3 dagen. En dan was er de prachtige Mundane History. De film begint eenvoudig, maar eindigt als een film over onze relatie tot het universum, onze plaats in het leven, de politiek, de sociale context, en menselijkheid.

Time for a trip down memorylane. Portishead was one of my first encounters with the triphop genre, together with Massive Attack, and Tricky. But somehow, it could be the voice, the arrangements, the lyrics, the pain, the intelligence, the whatever, Portishead always stood out, even escaped the genre. Sublime, cutting through my soul, my heart, my everything. They only made three albums so far, and one legendary live recording (see below).

Even weer een tripje langs de paden van mn geheugen. Dit keer is de bestemming Portishead. Toen ik het in 1994 de eerste keer hoorde schrok ik me de pleuris, dat muziek je zover kon meenemen. Die stem, die geluiden, die sfeer, die teksten, die pijn, die intelligentie. Portishead is een genre opzich. Subliem, zieldoorsnijdend, hartdoorklievend, en mezelfverliezend. Totnutoe hebben ze pas drie albums gemaakt, en 1 legendarische live opname (zie hieronder).

Almost out of breath and out of senses the child arrives at the playground. Bouncing the ball, ready in the new outfit, with a huge smile on the face, the child stands there, and looks around but sees no one.

There is a child on the playground with a huge smile. Slightly confused. The child sees others. Fragments of voices. Flashes of moments. Shades and Shadows. What? The child does not understand the voices. Why? The child does not understand what the images desire of him. How? The child does not understand what is meant. Where?

There is a child on the playground with a huge smile on the face, but a tear rolls down the cheek. The child looks around but sees no one, because the child is all alone.

De ogen slaan open. Het hart heeft maar 1 zin op de tong. Vandaag is de dag. Opgewonden springt het kindje uit bed en kijkt uit het raam naar buiten. Het regent maar de zon schijnt. Snel begint het kindje zich aan te kleden, pakt blij en vol trots de bal en rent de deur uit om buiten te gaan spelen.

Buiten adem en bijna buiten zinnen komt het kindje aan bij de speeltuin. Stuiterend met de bal, klaar in het nieuwe outfitje, met een gigantische glimlach op het gezicht, staat het kindje daar, en kijkt om zich heen, maar ziet niemand.

Er staat een kindje op het speelveld met een gigantische glimlach op het gezicht. Lichtelijk verward. Het kindje ziet anderen. Flarden van stemmen. Flitsen van momenten. Schimmen en Schaduwen. Wat? Het kindje begrijpt de stemmen niet. Waarom? Het kindje begrijpt niet wat de beelden van hem verlangen. Hoe? Het kindje begrijpt niet wat er wordt bedoeld. Waar?

Er staat een kindje op het speelveld met een gigantische glimlach op het gezicht, maar een traan rolt over de wang. Het kindje kijkt om zich heen, maar ziet niemand, want het kindje is helemaal alleen.

A couple of days ago a smart guerrilla / street art campagne in Rotterdam captured my attention. Though the content hinted towards something related to the dutch holiday Sinterklaas, the accompanied website which went online a couple of days later, explained it all. The campaign was a protest against Sinterklaas and its racist roots. In my opinion, not steppin into the realm of good and bad, but focussing on a more structural level, Sinterklaas is the obscene fantasmatic support of a xenophobic society. Een paar dagen geleden trok een slimme guerrilla / street art / kunst campagne in Rotterdam mijn aandacht. Hoewel de inhoud duidelijk verwees naar iets met betrekking tot Sinterklaas, was de verdere strekking niet meteen duidelijk totdat de bijbehorende website een paar dagen later online ging. De campagne was een protest tegen Sinterklaas en zijn racistische wortels. Naar mijn mening, zonder een oordeel over goed en slecht te hebben, en gericht op een meer structureel niveau, is Sinterklaas de obsceen fantasmatische ondersteuning van een xenofobe samenleving.
