‘Beat’ Takeshi Kitano Exposition at Fondation Cartier

Published: March 11th, 2010 by 7t7

TV personality; film star; director; comedian; writer and artist – ‘Beat’ Takeshi Kitano is one of Japan’s most ambidextrous exports. And I am a longtime fan. Famed for cult gameshow ‘Takeshi’s Castle’, alongside films including ‘Sonatonine’ and ‘Zatoichi’, Kitano’s paintings have caught the art world’s attention in recent years. Some of them already made appearances in some of Kitano’s movies, such as Dolls.

Despite being showered with exhibition offers, Kitano has refused them all, until now. Following a meeting with director of the Fondation Cartier, Hervé Chandès, Kitano agreed to produce a site-specific exhibition for the Paris institution.

‘Gosse de peintre’ or ‘kid painter’ has been designed to act as one gigantic installation, featuring attractions such as an oversized, inefficient sewing machine (Kitano’s visual metaphor for the contemporary art world), a waffle stand and a marionette theatre.

Alongside the interactive elements of the exhibition, Kitano will also be showing an array of paintings for the first time. Narrative, figurative and channeling the rudimentary spirit of the Art Naïve movement, the paintings – including a series of animal-plant hybrid images, created following a motorcycle accident in 1996 – bristle with high-colour energy.

Kitano has also shot a series of short comic films for the exhibition, all of which play on western notions of Japanese culture. ‘Gosse de peintre’ is the first exhibition of its kind, and will remain at the Fondation Cartier until September 12.

Banksy vs Robbo

Published: March 11th, 2010 by 7t7

Based on pictures from Robbo and his crew, it looks like they have gone and modified more Banksy pieces, warping their meanings. If you remember this all started in Camden with a stencil Banksy put up over a vintage Robbo tag, with the ensuing retaliation (here & here) from Robbo.

Last summer, Arrested Motion flew out to the UK and took a road trip up to Bristol to visit Banksy’s exhibition at the Bristol Museum. As mentioned, Banksy made an installation that replicated his studio and in that brilliant space, was Banksy’s sketchbook. They zoomed in to take detail pictures of the sketchbook giving us a little insight into mind of Banksy.

Walrus TV Artist Feature: Futura Interview

Published: March 9th, 2010 by 7t7

Known for pioneering a more abstract style of graffiti writing, Futura played a major role in the NYCs graffiti scene of the 70s. As the popularity of graffiti art flared in the 70’s and 80’s, Futura’s work was shown alongside artists such as Basquiat and Keith Haring. As his style developed, he began designing, and has collaborated with numerous artists and companies, including The Clash, Supreme, and A Bathing Ape. Get an inside look at his workspace and his love for b movies, video games and, apparently, all things Sony in the interview from “The Run Up,” available to the public for free for the first time, on Walrus TV.

A BATHING APE is AMBUSHED

Published: January 7th, 2010 by 7t7

Hypebeast did a wonderful feature recently with A BATHING APE® founder NIGO® and musical artist VERBAL (TERIYAKI BOYZ). The two now look to expand their horizons as they transcend music into fashion. VERBAL’s own brand, AMBUSH® Design, and A BATHING APE® puts together one of A BATHING APE’s most innovative and visually stimulating releases in some time, for a collection which released January 2nd. Hypebeast took this opportunity to discuss a number of different topics with NIGO®, as well as VERBAL and his AMBUSH® Design counterpart and wife, YOON. Ranging from the relationship between fashion and music, AMBUSH® Design’s approach to this project, to the current outlook of A BATHING APE®, this is perhaps one of the more introspective looks into the world of A BATHING APE® in recent times. CHECK IT OUT AT HYPEBEAST.
